At York Hall in Bethnal Green, London - Rising welterweight prospect and former amateur star (2007 Chicago WC lightweight gold medalist) Frankie Gavin (9-0, 8 KOs) continued his quest for glory with a dominant stoppage of highly durable British contender Michael Lomax (17-4-1, 2 KOs) at 2:42 of the seventh round. Southpaw Gavin was a master of the ring but Lomax fought back well and had some slim chances in the first couple of rounds. Gavin played much, boxed more and landed some decent shots to remind Lomax who is the top dog was. In rounds five and six, Gavin's superiority started too grow big. Late into the seventh, Gavin hurt his opponent with a major right to the ribs and punches hapless and helpless Lomax at the ropes until his corner threw in a towel to make another step up for Frankie official.
Former amateur standout Ronnie Heffron (5-0, 3 KOs) was forced to work hard en route to a points victory over durable trialhorse Kevin McCauley (9-22-3). Heffron was an attacker all the way but McCauley proved he was worth his money by countering Heffron every here and now despite being dominated. Referee Marcus McDonald had it 40-37 - for the prospect. BoxingScene scored the fight 39-37 - also for Heffron.
A Big Bang occurred as comebacking British heavyweight John McDermott (26-7, 17 KOs) erased his previous bad memories with the first-round destruction of china-chinned prospect Larry Olubamiwo (10-2, 9 KOs). McDermott, coming of two consecutive losses to Tyson Fury, floored Olubamiwo twice in just a minute and a half with stinging right hands. Time was 1:15 when referee Jeff Hinds stepped in and waved badly shaken Larry off. McDermott is now the BBBofC Southern Area heavyweight titlist.
