Gavin McDonnell will fight for the world title next month.

The Doncaster super-bantamweight, who is rated at number two, will contest the vacant WBC crown against Mexico’s Rey Vargas, who the Boxing Council have at number one in their rankings.

McDonnell (16-0-2, 4 KOs) will face Vargas (28-0, 22 KOs) on February 25, exclusively live on Sky Sports.

Oswaldo Küchle, Vargas’ promoter, told Fox Deportes that the fight would happen on the aforementioned date at a venue to be determined in London.

But Boxing Scene understands Matchroom Boxing boss Eddie Hearn will confirm on Tuesday that the fight will happen at a venue to be determined in Hull, with the likeliest location the Ice Arena in the city.

Both Luke Campbell, the WBC Silver lightweight champion who retained his crown with a four-round stoppage over veteran Scouser Derry Mathews in October, and former British super-lightweight title challenger Tommy Coyle –– who took on Tyrone Nurse in July –– are set to feature on the undercard.

Campbell, who also holds the Commonwealth title in the 135-pound division, is understood to be ready to face Yvan Mendy in a rematch over 12 rounds.

Mendy knocked Campbell down en-route to handing him his first defeat in the paid code in December, 2015.

No opponent has yet been confirmed for Coyle, though, and further details regarding the card will be revealed in due course, with an official announcement expected, as previously mentioned, on Tuesday.
