2008 Olympian Gary Russell Jr is far removed from making his professional debut but his 3rd round knockout over late replacement Robert Castaneda was the most memorable moment of the Night of the Olympians card which featured the professional debut of five 2012 Olympians.
Russell has been producing some highlight reel type knockouts and leaving people in awe with the display of his hand speed in his last few outings. Russell takes pride in being able to provide exciting finishes and giving the fans what they want as he discussed his most recent offering.
“I feel pretty good. I'm 100% blessed. I worked extremely hard in the gym and it pays off and shows in the ring. I don't look at myself as just a fighter, at the end of the day I am an entertainer and it’s my job to entertain my fans. And fortunately, that's exactly what I've been doing” said a smiling Russell as he talked to BoxingScene exclusively after his fight.
While Russell has been dazzling us with his speed and power, many are starting to wonder when Russell will step in against a bigger name opponent. This fight was only Russell’s second of the year and he has been very inactive compared to 2011 where he fought six times. Russell feels 2013 will not only be a busier year for him, but also one where he tries to challenge for a world title.
“Most definitely [I want to be busier next year]. 2013 will be a very big year for us. We’re actually planning on taking one of these titles. Hopefully by the end of 2013 [we fight] Ponce De Leon” shared Russell.
