Robert Garcia, trainer for Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31KOs), is willing to accept a wager being offered by Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26KOs) - but only under one condition. During their five city press tour for the September 13th rematch, Mayweather dared Maidana to bet his entire purse on the fight.
“If he really feels like he won the first fight then he should bet his purse. He should put his money where his mouth is. But he knows he can’t beat me," Mayweather said.
Garcia, and Maidana, are willing to take the bet - if Mayweather allows the Argentine puncher to wear his favorite Everlast MX gloves. One day prior to their scheduled meeting on May 3rd, Mayweather refused to go forward with the fight until Maidana agreed to use a different style of gloves by Everlast.
Mayweather rejected two different pairs of Everlast MX gloves, presented by Maidana, because the unbeaten boxer claimed that MX style of gloves have little to no padding around the knuckle area. The Nevada State Athletic Commission saw no issue with the second pair Maidana presented.
“He bet Chino’s purse and we responded by saying we’ll take the bet if Chino can wear his Mexican Everlast gloves. All I need is a handshake from him, but I know I won’t get that,” Garcia said.
