Angel Garcia, father and trainer of WBC/WBA champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16KOs), says his son should have already captured the IBF championship, currently held by Lamont Peterson (32-2-1, 16KOs), on at least two occasions.
Golden Boy Promotions has put together a doubleheader for August 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where Garcia and Peterson are defending their titles in separate fights and they may face each other if both retain their respective belts.
Peterson will be facing Edgar Santana, and Garcia appears in the main event against Rod Salka.
Angel is not too excited about challenging Peterson for his title, because he believes the IBF crown should have already been around Danny's waist, twice.
"When Peterson had the IBF, he fought [Amir] Khan. When they stripped the belt off [Peterson for a failed drug test], they didn't strip the IBF, so that belt should have been ours [because Danny then beat Khan]. That would have been ours already. Then when [Peterson] fought Matthysse, they also didn't fight for the IBF [because it took place at a catch-weight], so again that [belt] would have been ours [because Danny then beat Matthysse]," Angel told BoxingScene.com.
