Veteran trainer Robert Garcia needs at least three to four more fights with former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to show the boxer's true potential. Chavez returned on Saturday night in El Paso, Texas - where he won a ten round unanimous decision over Marcos Reyes at the Don Haskins Center.
Chavez was returning from an April TKO defeat at the hands of light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara.
For Chavez (49-2-1, 32 KOs), the fight with Reyes was his third fight in the last four, where he weighed in as a light heavyweight.
Chavez failed to make weight for the fight with Reyes, coming in at 170.8-pounds and reportedly had to pay Reyes $30,000, and he looked very lackluster during the contest. Chavez was a lot bigger and a lot stronger and that pulled him through, but he was hit often enough and wasn't very active in some rounds.
"Of course there is more work that is needed. Like I said before and I'll repeat it right now, I need three or four more fights so you could really see the potential of Julio. This fight was difficult, but we solved it," Garcia said.
