Top Rank's vice president Carl Moretti advised BoxingScene.com that HBO has approved IBF featherweight champion Orlando Salido (34-10-2, 22 KOs) as the opponent for WBA "regular" champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (18-0, 15 KOs). The fight takes place at The Palms resort in Las Vegas on September 11.
Salido replaces WBC champion Elio Rojas, who suffered a shoulder injury in training camp. BoxingScene.com reported on Tuesday that Salido was Top Rank's preferred replacement for Rojas. Gamboa was originally scheduled to fight Salido on HBO on July 24, but Salido withdrew because he needed more time to properly heal a cut from his May win over Cristobal Cruz. Top Rank later cut a deal with Don King to secure Rojas and moved the event to September.
The co-feature is still the same, with a WBA lightweight eliminator between two unbeatens, Anthony Peterson (30-0, 20 KOs) and Brandon Rios (24-0-1, 18 KOs).
