WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (20-0, 16KOs) may take over the planned route of Juan Manuel Lopez. Lopez was recently upset in eight rounds by Mexico's Orlando Salido. Top Rank's plan was to place Lopez in a rematch with Rafael Marquez in fall. Lopez will now take a few months off to recover from his first loss, and then he wants a rematch with Salido in the fall.
In a few recent interviews, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum has mentioned the possibility of allowing Gamboa to face Marquez (39-6, 35KOs) instead. Marquez, co-promoted by Top Rank's Mexican partner Zanfer Promotions, is likely going to fight on the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.-Sebastian Zbik undercard on June 4. Marquez was stopped by Lopez in eight rounds last November. He claimed a shoulder injury in the corner and was unable to come out for round nine.
