Former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa is already itching to get himself back in the gym.
He wanted to start training while sitting down. His coach, however, has asked him to continue his recovery process and now hopes the Cuban Olympic gold medal winner will be able to return to the gym sometime in April before fighting in the second half of 2020.
According to trainer Pedro Roque, the recovery of Gamboa, after having an operation on the Achilles of the right leg, has been better than expected and they are now starting to make plans for the next chapter of his career.
"Gamboa has already had the plaster removed, and he's following his rehabilitation with a lot of discipline," Roque revealed to George Ebro. "His warrior body responds well and we think he could start training with low intensity in April."
Gamboa was operated on in late January by a medical team at South Baptist Hospital, after suffering an injury in the second round of his December 28th title fight with Gervonta Davis, who secured a stoppage win in the twelfth round after dropping the Cuban boxer for a third time.
Now the tentative idea and, if his body is fully recovered, is to return to the ring sometime in September to test out his body - and then seek a second fight of much greater magnitude in late 2020 or early 2021.
"That's something we have in mind, but as long as he continues his development to get back to normal,'" Roque added. "He is wearing a sophisticated boot right now that allows him to support his foot and we've seen his confidence growing. We just want to see more progress.'
"Everything that happened has motivated Gamboa a lot to move on. That motivation we're going to use as a spearhead to move forward.''
