BoxingScene.com recently caught up with WBA interim-super feather weight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (22-0) who faces Darley Perez (28-0) on June 8th in Montreal as part of a HBO televised doubleheader that will be headlined by WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson facing Adonis Stevenson.
Gamboa has spent most of his career campaigning as a featherweight but moved up to 130 pounds in December when he defeated Michael Farenas on the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez 4 undercard. The bout against Perez will be fought at the lightweight limit of 135-pounds. Gamboa said that he doesn't have trouble making weight and that he is moving up so that he can be involved in the best possible fights.
"I am trying to target a weight in which I think there will be more lucrative fights not only for myself but for the fans and I think 135 is a good weight for that," Gamboa explained.
Last year two-division titlist Adrien Broner called for a fight against the Cuban Olympic gold medalist but so far the fight hasn't materialized. At the time Broner was campaigning as a super featherweight and has since captured a title in the lightweight division and will move up two more weight classes when he faces Paulie Malignaggi for the WBA welterweight title on June 22nd.
Gamboa said that he has never had a problem with facing Broner - but states that every time he moves up in weight, Broner does as well. He said that if Broner wants to move back down after the Malignaggi fight - they can get it on.
"Broner is the one that has always called me out and I am here you know. I haven't gone anywhere. I moved to 135 pounds. I feel comfortable here. I am not going anywhere so if he wants to keep looking for me he knows where to find me. He used to call me out when he fought at 130. I moved up, won a title at 130, and now I moved up again and I'm fighting for a title at 135 - and he moves up again so that is empty promises from his side. Why so much noise (if he doesn't want to fight?)," Gamboa told BoxingScene.com
