While one WBC flyweight title was defended and unified earlier this month, plans are being made for the secondary version of the belt.
BoxingScene has confirmed that Matchroom Boxing obtained promotional rights for the ordered Galal Yafai-Francisco ‘Chihuas’ Rodriguez interim WBC flyweight title fight. Matchroom submitted $222,000 as the lone bidder during Tuesday’s hearing as part of the sanctioning body’s weekly ‘Martes de Café’ meeting.
The bout is targeted for either June or July. Neither a definitive date nor location were made available as this goes to publication.
The outcome of the bid was expected, as Matchroom has served as the career-long promoter for Yafai, 9-0 (7 KOs), a 2020 Olympic Gold medalist. The 32-year-old southpaw claimed the interim belt in a sixth-round stoppage of former IBF flyweight titleholder Sunny Edwards last November in his hometown of Birmingham, England.
Galai’s career-best performance capped a terrific three-win campaign, all inside the distance.
Rodriguez, 39-6-1 (27 KOs), has served as the mandatory challenger since the 2023 annual WBC convention in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The 32-year-old from Monterrey, Mexico earned that designation after a ten-round win over countryman Joel Cordova earlier that year. It ignited a four-fight unbeaten streak since a November 2022 defeat to Junto Nakatani, 30-0 (23 KOs), now a three-division titlist.
Yafai-Rodriguez was ordered while Kenshiro Teraji (25-1, 16 KOs)—the reigning full WBC flyweight titlist— was permitted to face countryman and then-WBA titleholder Seigo Yuri Akui, 21-3-1 (11 KOs).
The bout—hailed as a leading contender for 2025 Fight of the Year—saw Teraji prevail via 12th round knockout. Given the time frame for the interim title fight, he could possibly fight again before the WBC orders the title consolidation bout later this year.
