World rated Diosdado “Prince” Gabi kept the winning streak of Fiipino fighters in the U.S going when he scored a fifth round technical decision over rugged Mexican Jose Alfredo Tirado in his US debut on the main event at the Stockton Civic Auditorium late Saturday.
Gabi’s new manager Michael Koncz informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that the fight went to the scorecards after Gabi got cut from a head-butt in the second round. All three judges scored the fight for the tough little Filipino . Two judges gave all five rounds to Gabi 50-45 while the third judge scored it 49-46 also for Gabi.
Gabi was taken to a nearby hospital where Koncz said he received “fifteen stitches above the left eyebrow.”
Scott Linesburgh of the Stockton Record said “both fighters were aggressive from the beginning of the fight. Gabi was cut in the second round on the head-butt, but it didn’t stop him from going after Tirado until the moment the fight was stopped.” Linesburgh reported that a good crowd of 2,396 paying boxing fans enjoyed the bout. Gabi improved to 26-2-1 with 18 knockouts while Tirado dropped to 22-3-3 with 17 KO’s.
Gabi has been training under the watchful eye of Freddie Roach at his Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles. He was the chief sparring partner of newly crowned WBC light flyweight champion Brian Viloria during Viloria’s preparation for his title shot against Mexico’s Eric Ortiz. In his final week of preparation Gabi spared with IBF super bantamweight champion Israel Vasquez who was also a regular sparring partner of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao.
Gabi said he had made “great sacrifices” in leaving his wife and ten month old son, family and friends behind but stressed “I know in my heart I will give a better life for my family when I fulfill my dream of becoming world champion.”
