Diosdado Gabi is being picked to replace Z “The Dream” Gorres and will fight Gerson Guerrero in the Philippines vs Mexico World Cup of boxing scheduled at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California on August 11.

Gorres’ medical clearance was withheld after doctors discovered that he had a tear in his retina according to Michael Aldeguer, son of respected  boxing patron Tony Aldeguer.

Gabi, the former IBF flyweight contender who lost by an eighth round stoppage to previously undefeated Vic Darchinyan was supposed to fight Jose Angel Beranza who was a late replacement for Francisco Rosas but Golden Boy Promotions has decided instead to scrap that matchup and instead get Gabi to take on Guerrero.

Gorres is scheduled to be checked by an eye specialist at 4:00 p.m. Los Angeles time but both Golden Boy vice president Eric Gomez and international matchmaker Samson Lewkowicz have indicated Gorres will not be cleared to fight.

However, the tear in the retina can be repaired but it would take some time before Gorres could be cleared to fight again.

The great Sugar Ray Leonard who suffered from a detached  retina returned to the ring after some time and continued his career highlighted by a highly controversial win over Marvin Hagler.
