The Games and Amusements Board boxing division says it has not issued Joan de Guia a clearance to fight undefeated Juan Carlos Burgos who is an excellent fighter with a record of 24-0 with 16 knockouts in a battle for the WBC Youth world featherweight championship.
Filipino trainer and former champion Emil Romano’s wife, journalist Virgie Romano earlier called to inform us that they are not responsible for arranging the De Guia-Burgos fight since he is no longer their fighter after he showed lack of courage and heart in a fight in which de Guia was knocked out in the 7th round by Ronald Pontillas last April 24.
De Guia has a record of 7-10-4 with 2 knockouts with 5 of his 10 losses coming by way of knockouts.
The 22 year old Burgos is the nephews of former world champion Victor Burgos and is considered one of the more promising young fighters from Mexico . He is ranked No. 1 by the WBC.
Victor Burgos was IBF light flyweight champion but when he moved up to challenge IBF/IBO flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan on March 3, 2007in Carson City, California . He was badly beaten, lost by a 12th round TKO and immediately afterwards was rushed to hospital where Burgos underwent brain surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain and to reduce the swelling.
Burgos survived the operation at the Los Angeles County Harbour –U.C.L.A. Medical Center.
