NEW YORK – In a strange scene straight out of the WWE, Tyson Fury challenged Deontay Wilder in the ring just moments after Wilder knocked Artur Szpilka unconscious Saturday night at Barclays Center.
The 6-foot-9 Fury jumped in the 6-7 Wilder’s face as Showtime’s Jim Gray was interviewing the WBC champion following his one-punch, ninth-round knockout of Szpilka (20-2, 15 KOs).
Wilder wasn’t exactly amused.
“We all know Fury, he’s just a phony, man,” Wilder said. “This is just for an act. … I ain’t scared of nobody. I’ll come to your backyard.”
That set off Fury (25-0, 18 KOs), who upset long-reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) by unanimous decision to win the IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO titles Nov. 28 in Dusseldorf, Germany.
“Listen, anytime, anyplace, anywhere,” Fury yelled into the microphone. “I’ll fight you in your backyard. Like I did Klitschko, I’ll beat you, you bum. You’re a bum.”
Fury half-heartedly began taking things out of his pockets and taking off his clothes, as if he was going to fight Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) right on the spot. Promoter Lou DiBella and others helped keep Fury away from Wilder as he continued his interview.
“This is just an act, baby,” Wilder said. “He’s not a real fighter. This an act. I don’t play this. I don’t play this. As you can see, baby, I don’t play this thing. This is just an act that you’re doing. You should’ve been an actor. But when we do step in this ring, this ain’t the WWE, baby. But when you do step in this ring with me, if you do, because this should’ve been done a long time ago – you can run around like you’re a preacher and all that you want. But baby, I promise you, when you step in that ring with me I will baptize you.”
While appealing, a Wilder-Fury fight isn’t likely to happen anytime soon.
Fury owes Klitschko an immediate rematch, which will take place on an unspecified date later this year. Wilder’s WBC mandatory against former WBA champ Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) also is due.
Povetkin also watched the Wilder-Szpilka fight from ringside.
