Their fight took place almost a year ago but their war of words has never gone away.
Deontay Wilder, the current unbeaten WBC Heavyweight champion, has claimed that Fury is scared to fight him again. The pair fought to a contentious split draw at the Staples Center, Los Angeles on December 1st, 2018.
Today, Wilder told Sky Sports: “Fury, I don’t think he ever wanted the rematch. I can understand him running. He can run, run, run as far as he can.
“But he’s got to remember, he’s signed the contract. Anybody know that the pen is a silent warrior. You’re going to have to pay (the) consequences of getting out of that.”
Wilder rematches Luis Ortiz at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas after their March 2018 thriller while Fury, unbeaten in 29 fights, has defeated Sefer Seferi, Francesco Pianeta, Tom Schwarz and Otto Wallin since he came back to the sport after a period out of the ring due to mental health issues, drug use and obesity.
In response to Wilder’s comments Fury said “If I was afraid of you I wouldn’t have fought you!” he told his followers on social media. “You had to rob me and give me a draw. I don’t know why on earth you would think I am bothered about you. Just get through your fight with Ortiz, do your own thing, stop using my name for relevance. You should be on 20% but you’re not I’m giving you a fair share because I’m a fair man. I’ll see you February 22nd to finish what I started. This time you’re going to get smashed you big bum dosser.”
Fury has been enjoying life out the ring lately recording a Christmas song with pop star Robbie Williams, meeting movie stars like Jason Momoa and entering into the world of WWE where he beat Braun Strowman.
Although nothing is official yet it does seem as though Fury and Wilder will meet in the ring to settle their rivalry early next year. And that could be the first of three fights which could bring the curtain down on Fury’s boxing career with the 31-year-old telling PA Sport last month, “I think I am coming to the tail end of my boxing career at the ripe old age of 31. I don’t think I will have many more fights. Maybe another three maximum. That’s it.”
