Peter McDonagh has been handed his next fight date.
The three-weight Irish champion, whose last outing came on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr.’s British middleweight title victory over now-retired Nick Blackwell, will feature on the same bill as a big summer showdown.
McDonagh (26-28-1, 3 KOs) went to points with Arvydas Trizno at Wembley’s SSE Arena back in March and had his fight aired exclusively live on Spike TV in the UK.
But now ‘The Connemara Kid’, 38, is set for an altogether bigger opportunity when he boxes an opponent to be named on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s world heavyweight title defences against Wladimir Klitschko, the former king, on July 9 at Manchester Arena.
The bill will be exclusively live on BoxNation in the UK and HBO will screen the action across the pond, while RTL will be the German broadcaster for ‘Repeat Or Revenge’, which is being promoted by Hennessy Sports in association with K2.
Although an opponent has yet to be named for McDonagh’s ring return, Boxing Scene understands that former world champion Junior Witter is in the running.
Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that Hughie Fury (20-0, 11 KOs), the WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight champion, will return on the card.
He had been due to box at the ECHO Arena in Liverpool on June 4 following his technical decision triumph over Fred Kassi at the Copper Box Arena in London on April 30, but the cut suffered to his left eye in that aforementioned Kassi showdown has ruled him out of the interim fight on Merseyside and he is now set for a 10- or 12-rounder on his cousin’s undercard.
