Responding to a recent news brief on BoxingScene.com, Mick Hennessy, promoter of undefeated WBC super middleweight champ Carl Froch, denies that he ignored the recent offer that was presented by Lou DiBella, promoter for Jermain Taylor. DiBella has claimed that he sent an offer over to Hennessy for a clash on March 28, on Showtime, but has not heard back.
Hennessy denies the claim, but he admits that there are issues with the fight being on March 28. He doesn't know if there is enough time to get the UK television rights in order by the date, or if the date is available to televise the fight, in the UK.
”It's rubbish. There have been offers going backwards and forwards. I’ve made offers to them but they’re not even acknowledging them so for them to say that they’ve not even heard from me is ridiculous," Hennessy told Setanta Sports. "I only spoke to him a couple of days ago and told him where I was at."
"But the problem here is that there’s a date in America for March 28 and while we are interested in going to the US, right now we’ve got to make sure that date tallies up with the UK rights for the fight because it’s short notice and broadcasters make their schedules well in advance. So that’s what we are working on at the moment. I’m talking to all of the broadcasters and if we sort that issue out, and the deal works out, then we are prepared to go and fight in the US on March 28."
Hennessy told Setanta that it makes more sense for Taylor to come to England. He says the offer he presented for the fight to take place in England is much higher than the offer to stage it in America.
"They’re saying they’ve made a good offer but we’ve made an offer to them which is probably close to two and a half times what they’ve offered us. And bear in mind here that we’ve got the champion," Hennessy reasoned. "My offer is for him to come over Nottingham, probably in April.
"But, in saying that, there's no problem with the dates or the venue really as we're also prepared to go to the US if the deal is right. We told them what we wanted to come to the US and they turned it down. Still, we'll have to try to sort out the UK rights to make the fight happen in The States and if we're happy with that we'll go out on the 28th.
