According to trainer Freddie Roach, there is another fighter being considered for the ring return of former WBC middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs).
Chavez has reunited with Roach for the first time since their split in 2014. They are currently training at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, California.
One of the frontrunners mentioned over the last few weeks has been Gabe Rosado, who barely got past his opponent Antonio Gutierrez on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson. Rosado went down and won a razor thin ten round unanimous decision.
Besides Rosado, Roach says they are looking at J'Leon Love, who is promoted by Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"His next fight could be in Texas, or here in Los Angeles," said Roach to ESPN Deportes, stating that Chavez's return could by on July 16 or July 23. "We are considering two opponents and one of the possibilities is J'León Love."
Love (22-1, 12 KO's) has won four fights in a row since getting knocked out by Rogelio Medina in three rounds in August of 2014.
Roach is impressed with Chavez's work ethic. They had a falling out previously due to Chavez's declining workrate in camp. It created weight issues and poor performances in the ring. Chavez has been out of the ring since last July's win over Marcos Reyes. Chavez injured his hand during the contest and had to undergo surgery. He was forced to sit out for several months and is now fully healed and ready to go.
"Thirteen days out of thirteen. He came in thirteen days in a row and has not let me down in any workouts. He arrives every day, on time and is working very hard," boasted Roach."
