Promoter Frank Warren is already plotting a first world title defence for new WBO super-featherweight champion Ricky Burns.

The Scottish sensation lifted the title against Roman Martinez on Saturday night, climbing off the canvas to win a points decision against the hard-hitting Puerto Rican.

And Burns will go down in Celtic sporting folklore for the thrilling nature of his win.

"Scotland has a new hero and we will get Ricky back out to defend soon," said Warren after the fight, having seen his gamble on paying big money to stage the fight in Glasgow pay off.

"I'd like Ricky to fight again before Christmas. He deserves a few weeks off because that was one hell of a fight, but I'm sure he will be back before too long.

"Glasgow is a wonderful fight city, and the fans were fantastic this evening. Once word gets around about Ricky he will be fighting in front of bigger and bigger crowds."

Warren added that he always believed Burns would win, even when he was dropped from a peach of a right hand in the first.

"I said to Ricky beforehand that if he boxed well he could win the fight," said Warren. "I think the knock down was more because of nerves rather than anything else.

"He looked a bit unsettled before the bell went, but it was a question of getting the first couple of rounds out of the way, and then he showed what a great fighter he is.

"Both men showed so much heart in the ring tonight. I don't think I have seen too many better fights."
