On June 4th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, WBC super featherweight titlist Francisco Vargas and Orlando Salido waged war over twelve pulsating rounds. Vargas (23-0-2, 17KOs) retained his title as the fight was ruled a draw. So what's next for 'Bandito'?
"As you know, not only was it potential 'fight of the year' for this year but he also received 'fight of the year' for last year," said Vargas' manager Ralph Heredia, referencing Vargas' thrilling off-the-canvas victory against Takashi Miura in November.
"We had him in back-to-back wars, we're just resting. Of course healing with those ugly cuts he received. So we'll see, right now if everything goes well we'll probably bring him back in November, December and hopefully stay away from another war."
Asked about the possibility of an immediate rematch with Salido, Heredia responded,"I can't rule that out, you never know but for the meantime I prefer to get him some rest and if there's going to be a rematch, maybe early next year some time."
And what about another go with Miura, who attended the Vargas-Salido battle last month? Heredia would like to see Miura and Salido trade punches - and then Vargas would face the winner of that fight.
"Aww geez, you want him to have a short career," said Heredia laughing, who then added. "I like both match-ups, both are great fights. But you know what I'd really like? I'd like Salido and Miura to fight each other and we'll fight the winner? How's that?"
