Barry McGuigan believes that his recent link up with Chris Sanigar has brought a fight between Carl Frampton (22-0, 14 early) and Lee Selby (22-1, 8 KOs) a step closer.
Frampton is promoted by McGuigan’s Clones Cyclone outfit. Selby is managed and trained by Sanigar. A fight between the two could be relatively easy to make if both continue to win and impress as McGuigan yesterday announced that the two parties will co-promote Lee Haskins's IBF bantamweight title fight against Ivan Morales on May 14.
“Frampton and Selby is a definite fight for the future, no doubt about it,” declared McGuigan when speaking to the South Wales Echo. “The fact we have struck up a relationship with Chris and Jamie Sanigar makes it all the more easier to happen. These guys need to build themselves up for exciting fights and then we can get them together.”
IBF Super bantamweight holder Frampton out-pointed WBA World counterpart Scott Quigg in February and is now eying a move to featherweight, with WBA Super World title-holder Leo Santa Cruz mentioned as a possible opponent.
Selby netted the IBF featherweight belt via a Technical Decision win over Evgeny Gradovich last year. The Welshman made a successful defence against Fernando Motiel in October and has lined up mandatory challenger Eric Hunter for April 9 at London’s O2 Arena—Charles Martin’s IBF heavyweight title defence is the main event on the Eddie Hearn-promoted bill.
A few more wins for both men could make a collision inevitable, especially if Frampton makes good on his claim that his future lies at 126lbs.
