Last week, BoxingScene.com first reported that a date of July 30th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn is likely for the battle between IBF bantamweight world champion Carl Frampton (22-0, 14KOs) and WBA world featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (32-0-1, 18KOs).

Frampton is aiming to become the first Northern Ireland boxer to win world titles at different weights.

In February, he finally met Scott Quigg in a long awaited showdown - where both boxers staked their super bantamweight belts.

Frampton won a twelve round decision, where he added the WBA belt to the IBF title he already held. He also broke Quigg's jaw in the contest.

However, he was later stripped of the WBA crown because he did not agree to a defence against mandatory challenger Guillermo Rigondeaux - who the sanctioning body has now ordered to face Moises Flores for the vacant crown.

Frampton has a mandatory due under the IBF to Shingo Wake of Japan, but there is no word on whether or not Frampton will vacate the belt or submit an application to get an exception from the sanctioning body.

On the same night as the Frampton v Quigg clash in Manchester, Santa Cruz defended his WBA featherweight title by knocking out former beltholder Kiko Martinez.

Many fans were upset with the lack of action in his fight with Quigg, but Frampton is very confident that his showdown with Santa Cruz will be a lot more exciting due to his very active style.

“Santa Cruz comes forward and throws loads of punches. He will come to fight and put on more of a show than Scott Quigg – who didn’t want to know for the first six rounds of our fight. Santa Cruz is tough,” said Frampton to Irish Boxing.

“He is a three weight world champion but I am confident of winning the fight. I will have as much support there as Santa Cruz. My fans are the best in the world and the support I get is out of this world. And I hope to pick up loads of support from Irish Americans on the East Coast.”
