Hosea Burton will fight for the British light heavyweight title next month.
The undefeated 27-year-old (14-0, 5 KOs), who is the cousin of world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, is set to take on a fellow undefeated fighter for the crown –– which was recently vacated by Bob Ajisafe –– at the Manchester Arena on February 27, exclusively live on Sky Sports Box Office.
Burton will face Miles Shinkwin (12-0, 6 KOs), also 27 and from Bushey in Hertfordshire, in his first major title shot since making his debut back in 2012 as part of the undercard to the super bantamweight world title unification showdown between Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg.
“I have always wanted to land the British title and finally I have my chance,” said Burton, who is trained at Gloves Community Centre by Trainer of the Year Joe Gallagher.
“The division is as good as ever at world level, but domestically it is poor because the British title hasn’t been fought for.
“Hopefully, by making the belt active again, the division can be as exciting as it should be.
“Shinkwin is a good test, but I’m very confident I will get him out of there in style.
“I believe I am one of the best light heavyweights out there and I want to be as active as possible this year.
“I want to win the British title outright and have some good tests before facing the top international guys in the division.”
Elsewhere, Conrad Cummings will get the chance to shine on the biggest stage of his career after also being confirmed as an addition to the pay-per-view bill.
Undefeated Cummings (7-0-1, 3 KOs), who fought to a draw in his last fight against Alfredo Meli (11-0-1, 3 KOs) for the vacant Celtic middleweight title, has been a regular on stablemate Carl Frampton’s undercards for the past two years and will be looking to use this latest showcase as an opportunity to launch his own title aspirations this year.
He said: “I’m delighted to be boxing on this huge Sky Sports Box Office show.
“Carl Frampton vs. Scott Quigg is going to be one of the biggest boxing events of 2016 and I’m privileged to be part of it.
“I want to be challenging for a British or Commonwealth title in the next 12 months, so nights like these will help prepare me for big championship fights in the future.”
Meanwhile, Cummings’ fellow Cyclone Promotions puncher, Edinburgh’s Commonwealth gold medallist Josh Taylor (3-0, 3 KOs), will also box on the card.
