Former WBA super bantamweight champion Loris Stecca, 54-years-old, has been sentenced to eight years and six months in prison for attempted murder. Stecca stabbed his business partner Roberta Cester in late 2013 at a gym they operated in Rimini (Italy). Cester survived but was seriously injured.
Stecca was a good amateur, turned pro in 1980 and won the WBA title in 1984 (the same year that his brother Maurizio won Olympic gold in Los Angeles) but lost the title in his first defense - and as it was the sole two defeats in Loris´ career came to Victor Callejas. A serious car accident ended his career in 1989. His total record reads 55-2-2 and he also held the EBU and Italian titles.
Loris Stecca made headlines again in 2008 after a suicide attempt.
