Clinton Woods has been retired since 2009. The popular Sheffield fighter found a lot of success in his career, winning the British, Commonwealth, EBU and IBF world titles during his pro run. He closed his career with a record of 42-5-1, 25KOs.
During his career, Woods suffered a single knockout loss and that KO loss came at the hands of Roy Jones Jr.
Jones, 46-years-old, is three years older than Woods and made his pro debut five years earlier.
To date, Jones continues to fight and suffered a vicious knockout at the hands of former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli last month in Moscow.
Jones, at one time universally considered to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport, is now a shell of the man who at one time held around seven titles at light heavyweight.
He received Russian citizenship last September and now fights overseas under the Russian flag.
“It is a very sad story about Roy Jones, what is happening with him” said Woods to the Sheffield Star. “Jones is talking about still fighting. It is sad, because he was a great fighter. I have got a big picture at my gym (in Westfield) of the greatest fighters and Roy Jones is up there. Now he has just got beat in four rounds?
“No disrespect to Enzo Maccarnelli, he did what he had to do. But the way he went down... You have got to remember, since he beat me, he has been knocked out five or six times now. Since coming down from heavyweight he got knocked out by Antonio Tarver, (second round 2004) Glen Johnson, (the same year ninth round) the Australian, (Danny Green, first round 2009) a Russian, (Denis Lebedev, 2011, tenth round) and now he has been knocked out again. It is a sad story with him. It is the way he is getting knocked out. It is pretty bad. It is not the referee stopping it, he is absolutely gone.”
“He is fighting under a Russian federation now, but it is time to pack it in Roy."
