Mexico's Moses Flores, who holds the WBA interim-super bantamweight world title, is dedicating his next fight to the memory of Alejandro 'Cobrita' Gonzalez, who was killed earlier this month in his native Jalisco.
"I'm going to talk to Alejandro's dad, who is a good friend. If he allows me, I could would homage to him," Flores told ESPN Deportes.
Flores will return on February 25 in Texas, where he will take on the full WBA super bantamweight champion, undefeated two-time gold medal winner Guillermo 'Chacal' Rigondeaux of Cuba.
Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 KO's) vs. Flores (25-0, 17 KO's) will be part of the HBO Pay-Per-View undercard to the main event which features Puerto Rico superstar Miguel Cotto making his ring return against James Kirkland. Their bout was going to a purse bid this past Monday in Panama, but it was canceled as both sides had a deal in place.
"Knowing that we have the date is the best news of the year because they had me in the freezer, and this was my Christmas gift. I've been training for three months and I'm going to use 23 and 24 to rest and start training camp for the fight on the 26," Flores said.
"I thought that the fight was not going to be done, because I had been looking for it for a long time and it did not come together. Now it's going to be a good fight, but I'm positive that on that day I'm going to establish myself as one of the best boxers of Mexico."
"Rigondeaux is a fighter that you can not throw one punch at a time because it backfires on you well, so we'll try a lot of things. This fight will change my life for me and my family. I hope to be recognized, and if I beat Rigondeaux and they do not recognize me - then it's better for me to go into soccer (laughs)."
