Southpaw Terry Flannigan is the new English super-featherweight champion with a comprehensive point’s victory over Dougie Curran in Manchester earlier tonight.
The 22 year-old, who was 13-0 going into his first title bout, never looked in danger as he racked up round after round and was robbed a knockdown in the final round as a right hand caused Curran to touch the canvas.
In the end it didn’t matter though as the three judges at ringside had the bout right at 99-90 and 99-91(twice) to award the home fighter with a well-deserved first professional title.
Also on the card at Bowlers Exhibition Centre, Joe Selkirk scored a hard-fought eight-round win over former Mixed Martial Artist Jason Ball to improve his record to 9-0 and move closer to a domestic title shot.
The Liverpudlian, who has suffered with inactivity in his four years as a pro, looked like he may be able to take out the Doncaster man early on, but ‘Daddy Cool’ held in there to make it a tighter affair than expected, with Selkirk being awarded the contest 77-75.
The final headline bout of the evening saw Prizefighter champion Rocky Fielding pick up the 10th win of his career and keep his unbeaten record intact against Irishman Ciaran Healy.
‘Rocky from Stocky’ was never in trouble against the veteran and pulled off a fourth round stoppage when Healy’s corner had seen enough of Fielding’s crunching body shots hurting their fighter.
Fielding, 24, is progressing nicely towards a potential English title shot and with his army of adoring fans, could be making big noises in the super-middleweight division over the next twelve months.
