Lewis Taylor (18-1-1, 3 KOs) has been told he will fight Tommy Langford (15-0, 5 KOs) on February 13 at Liverpool’s Echo Arena for the vacant Commonwealth middleweight title and Langford’s WBO Inter-Continental strap.
"I am fighting Tommy Langford," Taylor told Boxing Scene.
"He already has the [WBO Inter-Continental] title. Just needing to sign the contract but been told it is confirmed."
The Frank Warren promotion, headlined by Terry Flanagan’s WBO World lightweight title defence against Derry Mathews, will also feature the English cruiserweight title rematch between Lawrence Bennett and Matty Askin.
Langford, rated six by the WBO, has been in fine form of late. The 26-year-old added to his unbeaten professional record earlier this month when the Midlander stopped Robert Swierzbinski in five rounds, on the undercard of Andy Lee’s unsuccessful first defence of his WBO World middleweight title against Billy Joe Saunders.
Taylor was last out on November 21 when the 25-year-old defended his English middleweight title halting Jez Wilson in five rounds at Rotherham’s Magna Centre. The Dronfield fighter's only defeat to date came against Ireland's Eamonn O'Kane when losing out on a majority decision for O'Kane's IBF Inter-Continental middleweight strap back in May.
The Commonwealth title was most recently held by Billy Joe Saunders who defended it six times after winning the vacant prize against Tony Hill with a first round stoppage back in 2012. Saunders then went on to win British and European honours before challenging Andy Lee on December 19.
A win for Langford will not only give him a second title but will edge him one step nearer to a possible world title fight in the future with promotional stablemate Saunders.
