Same town, same fighters... same result. Four months after fighting to a 12-round draw in Playa Carmen, Mexico, Javier Prieto and Ivan Cano produced another stalemate in their rematch Saturday evening, with the winner eyeing a possible title shot at the belt currently in possession of Omar Figueroa, who may or may not vacate in the near future.
The consensus following their fight in May was that Prieto had the screws put to him. The 27-year old fought with revenge on his mind, jumping out to a commanding start as Cano seemed intent on measuring up his foe before moving into action.
It proved to be a wise strategy, as Cano made things dangerously difficult for the three ringside judges. The best he could muster up was pulling even with Prieto on two of the three scorecards, with Prieto winning in the eyes of the third judge.
Prieto is now unbeaten in his past 10 starts as his record moves to 24-7-2 (18KOs).
The glass-half-full viewpoint towards Cano's career is that he's unbeaten in three straight contests. Still, the official verdict leaves Cano without a win for the fourth time in his past six contests. His record is now 22-6-2 (15KOs).
Zalina Munoz scored a 10-round decision over Karina Hernandez in the evening's chief support.
