The BBBoC have decided to postpone purse bids for Paul Smith’s mandatory Super middleweight British title defence against Rocky Fielding due to Fielding’s inability to make the championship weight for last weekend’s Commonwealth title fight with Charles Adamu—a 12-round decision win. Bids for the all-Liverpool encounter were due in by April 9th, but the postponement has left the mooted fight hanging in the balance. Smith, 34-3 (19), has openly stated that he hopes to secure a fight against WBO titlist Arthur Abraham later in the year.
Fielding missed the weight by a whopping six pounds. He was over the stipulated limit on the morning of the contest and decided not to make the weight after speaking to Eddie Hearn. Fielding moved to 18-0 (10) by beating Adamu, but he no longer holds the Commonwealth belt and is unlikely to be allowed to contest the domestic title until he has proved that he can nail the 168lb weight limit for future bouts.
The Board will examine Smith’s title options at their next meeting.
