WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel is aiming, like Erik Morales, to become the first Mexican fighter to win four major titles in four weight divisions. Montiel is training in the gym and plans to defend his title against mandatory Eric Morel in the fall. Montiel says that winning a fourth world title would mean a jump to super bantamweight in the not so distance future.
"I know that Oscar De La Hoya, who is Mexican-American, won six world titles in six different divisions. Aside from that, not one fighter born in Mexico has earned more than three titles [in three divisions]. My desire is to win a fourth title," Montiel told ESTO. "I am working hard to make a defense of my title against Eric Morel of Puerto Rico. The fight was postponed a few weeks ago because of an injury I suffered in training, but I am already fine."
