Things are heating up in the bantamweight division. Last weekend Joseph Agbeko retained his IBF bantamweight title with a twelve round decision over undisputed WBC/IBF/WBA super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan. The win has already made Agbeko a marked man. WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel wants a unification bout with Agbeko. Montiel is willing to further postpone a fight with mandatory Eric Morel to meet Agbeko in September or October.
Montiel told promoter Fernando Beltran of Mexico to try to get him that fight. But, he also said that it's Beltran's decision as to whether he fights Morel or Agbeko next.
"I am arranging the matter. From what I was made to understand, Beltran can negotiate the unification with Agbeko and if he manages to make [the fight], that would be fabulous. I have always wanted the big fights and now more than ever I am very close to achieving that," Montiel told ESTO.
As far as Darchinyan losing last weekened, Montiel would be willing to still fight him in the future.
"For all that time he avoided me, and went along a path that was easier and look what happened. If the fight is made against Joseph and I beat him, I am not going to have any complaints about giving him the opportunity and then putting him in his place. But maybe he won't want it. He has a big mouth, always challenged me and never wanted to sign [for a fight]," Montiel said.
