WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando “KO-Chulito” Montiel spoke with BoxingScene.com/NotiFight.com about his recent motorcycle accident, a future fight with Nonito Donaire, the Showtime bantamweight tournament and more.
"I went to an event. You receive many invitations and you can only reject so many. There was supposed to an expert on motorcycle, but you never know where the danger lies, and we skidded on a curve as there were other riders ahead of us and there was loose gravel on the road."
What is the story on the injury?
“There has been much speculation, that I was in a coma, that I had multiple fractures, but fortunately none of that happened. I had some scratches on my left arm, and a cut on my shin, but most of it was from the impact of the hit. I have to keep an eye on the cut, because it can get infected, and my doctor Marco Antonio Leyva did what was necessary here in Los Mochis to prevent that. Everything went very well and now I'm in recovery "
You spoke about fighting on November 20 in Cancun, where Giovani Segura and Omar Chavez would also see action?
"Yes, that fight was scheduled for November 20, although I had no opponent, but I it would be very hard for me to recover in time to make this commitment. I'm in a cast. I'm doing everything the doctor tells me, but it could be complicated with the time, so perhaps we could delay the fight a couple of weeks."
What do you think about the bantamweight tournament which starts on December 11 in Irapuato, Mexico?
"I do not know how you can call this a tournament if there are only four fighters. It's interesting but not very relevant. I would like Abner Mares to win, because he is Mexican, and I also think he has the attributes to win, but I don't overlook the remaining three."
Some say that this tournament is to make the best bantamweight in the world, but a great majority of the experts say the best 118-pounder on the planet is Fernando Montiel, Nonito Donaire or Anselmo Moreno. What do you think?
"You can say many things, but you can't make the best bantamweight in the world if you are missing some of the best."
When will the long-awaited fight with Nonito Donaire happen?
"It's a fight I want, but failed to materialize, but I think it is closer than ever, and also It would be very interesting face the winner of the tournament, and althought I want Abner Mares to win it because he is the Mexican - if [Vic] Darchinyan wins it would be a pleasure to fight him. I have wanted Darchinyan for a long time, and I have challenged him several times."
Anything you like to add Fernando?
"Greetings to all the people who like boxing, and I hope to recover soon and return to the ring."
