Australian boxing legend Jeff Fenech, who at one time trained Mike Tyson, is worried about what might happen if his former fighter lands a big shot on Roy Jones Jr.
Earlier this week, it was announced that Tyson and Jones would collide in an eight round exhibition fight on September 12 in California. The fight will be carried on pay-per-view.
Tyson, 54-years-old and a former undisputed heavyweight champion, has not fought since suffering a stoppage loss at the hands of journeyman Kevin McBride in 2005.
And Jones, 51-years-old and a former four division champion, has been away from action since early 2018.
While neither guy will be looking to hurt each other, Fenech fears the hard punches will start landing once one of them connects with a serious blow.
"Mike looks in good shape, and Roy is in good shape and I think it's going to be hard for these guys to have an exhibition," Fenech told Sporting News.
"I think if one of them hits the other, it could be a war and we might have something unforseen happen. I think poor Roy might feel the power of Mike Tyson. When you look at Mike, you think of his punching power. And when you think of Roy towards the end of his career, Roy's going to be in a bit of trouble if Mike lands any punch on him.
"Roy doesn't have that speed and the gift he had when he was greatest middleweight or super middleweight of all time. But power never leaves you, and Mike still has it."
Fenech remembers when Jones traveled to Australia and was knocked out by Danny Green in 2009.
"Danny Green doesn't punch at all like Mike Tyson. I guarantee that - I trained them both," Fenech said.
"I'd hate Roy to get hurt, but Mike just looks so powerful. And he looks so great at the moment. He looks as good as he's ever looked. His chest is pumped, it's great to see him. It's great to see Roy train, but I'd hate for anyone to get hurt. I think Mike is a good enough person and he'll look after Roy."
