While rising Puerto Rican star Felix Verdejo (23-0, 15 KOs) waits for a determination on where and when he will fight again, he is attending sessions with a sports psychologist.
The fighter's team enlisted the services of a specialist shortly after Verdejo's fight against Nicaraguan Oliver Flores in February. The young Puerto Rican was in trouble at the end of the fight, which he won by unanimous decision. His team admitted their disappointment with his performance at the end of the contest.
"Felix is ??working with a sports psychologist. We think it can help him work with his decision making and everything that represents his career right now," said Ricky Marquez, manager and coach of Verdejo, to Carlos Gonzalez.
Verdejo's last few fights have been drawing a lot of criticism, because while he was victorious he appeared to struggle at times and was hit way too often by his opponents. He also wasn't explosive during the fight with his power punches doing less damage than expected.
He also nearly derailed his entire career in 2016 after being careless with a motorcycle, which resulted in a crash with several minor injuries suffered.
The fighter has been seeing the specialist for about two weeks.
"I have known the person since my days working with the national team during the Central American Games of 2010 (Mayagüez). I find him to be a good resource. What we are looking for are people who help the team," said Márquez.
On the other hand, he could not guarantee that Verdejo will be active in New York in June as had been announced.
"There's still nothing on the horizon. We are waiting to see what is next. It is not known if his next fight will be in June. It is supposed to be, but I don't who if it will be yet," said Marquez.
