Puerto Rican icon Félix "Tito" Trinidad is very much in favor of Miguel Cotto's upcoming fight with WBA "regular" junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (24-0, 15KOs). Cotto (37-3, 30KOs) will fight Trout at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Trinidad doesn't know much about Trout but he likes the idea of Cotto returning from the loss with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and stepping right back in the ring with a title fight. He feels a possible title win will give Cotto leverage to negotiate a future fight with WBC champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
“I believe this fight with Trout is a good opportunity [for Miguel] to obtain another championship and later to look for a more lucrative fight, as he could unify with Canelo Álvarez. He would go into this fight on equal terms, as the champion and not the challenger," Trinidad told Raul Alzaga.
“And although I don't know much about this fighter [Trout], the fact that he doesn't have a [major] promoter – in spite of being undefeated and being a champion – it doesn't smell so good to me. It might not be that hard of a fight for Cotto and he secures the possibility of being a champion again."
