BoxingScene caught up with Felix "Tito" Trinidad and touched base on a number of topics. We spoke to Trinidad about his upcoming May bout against junior middleweight champion Ronald "Winky" Wright, and we just had to get his thoughts on potential rematches against Oscar De La Hoya and middlweight king Bernard Hopkins.
BoxingScene: You are taking on another tough opponent in Winky Wright, but most experts feel Winky Wright is not big enough to compete with you.
Trinidad: Winky Wright is a great fighter, this will be a tough fight but I will previal. I don't see size being an issue because Winky Wright comes into his fights (weighing) at the middleweight level. He had to train hard to make 154 pounds so there will be no excuses.
BoxingScene: Winky Wright has told several news outlets that he does not think you will be able to hurt him and that he will break you down in this fight on route to a possible late stoppage.
Trinidad: Winky Wright has never fought Felix Trinidad, he never felt my power. Once I hit him, like all my other opponents, he will go down. I am not looking past Winky Wright, he is challenge, but I will not lose. This will be another great win for me and for Puerto Rico.
BoxingScene: Do you think Winky's southpaw style will present problems for you?
Trinidad: In my career, I have fought many southpaw fighters and beaten them all. On May 14th, Winky Wright will be another southpaw that I will defeat.
BoxingScene: Do you see this fight ending in a knockout?
Trinidad: I will be coming to this fight to determined to win, I think that there is a very good chance that I will knockout Winky Wright.
BoxingScene: Not to look past Winky Wright, but Bernard Hopkins is the fighter most fans want to see you fight. This is Bernard's last year in boxing, do you want to fight Bernard Hopkins?
Trinidad: Yes, I came back to boxing for the big fights and Bernard Hopkins is one of those big fights. I want to fight Bernard Hopkins before he retires and get my revenge. When we fight again, the result will not be the same.
BoxingScene: Hopkins says that you are ducking a rematch.
Trinidad: No, we are not ducking anyone. Ask Bernard Hopkins why he would not grant me a rematch after our fight. I retired and then he wants to fight. He knows that this time I will beat him. I want this fight, but I do not know if he wants to fight me.
BoxingScene: Before we let you go Tito, we recently spoke with Oscar De La Hoya who said that he would be willing to stage a rematch, but not at 160 pounds. He said he would do it at 154 pounds, would you fight Oscar below 160?
Trinidad: I will fight Oscar De La Hoya, but he does not want to fight me again. He knows that the fight will not happen at 154 pounds. He goes to 160 pounds to fight Bernard Hopkins, but will not fight Felix Trinidad at 160 pounds. That should tell the fans that all of these fighters do not want to fight Felix Trinidad.
