Rapid aging and fading in the ring is a sad story for far too many world-class boxers when they meet their Father Time, while still pretending to have something left in the tank. It’s twice as sad for one who was once an elite fighter, maybe even a king of his weight class (or at least near the very top of it).
Another pugilist, who learned this lesson a painful way, was former IBF super flyweight champion Dmitry “Baby” Kirillov (31-7-1, 10 KOs), who was knocked out in eight by rising Ural prospect Evgueny “Happy Gilmore” Chuprakov (14-0, 8 KOs).
The fight, billed for a vacant WBO European 130lb title, was a headliner of a small show, promoted by German Titov Promotions at the Arena in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
Kirillov, 36, dictated the pace early on, showing his elusiveness and superior guard. But Chuprakov soon adjusted to his opponent’s approach and started to deliver bombs.
Once inside or at mid range he used his reflexes and speed to outhustle a faded former flyweight. The end came in the eighth round, when Chuprakov connected with a very solid left hook to the body to have Kirillov down and out.
Happy Gilmore, age 25, scored his fourth straight stoppage win, and he is now 3-0, 3 KOs, in 2015. Kirillov, who kicked off his comeback (after almost five years off the ring) with two wins in 2013, has dropped his third straight and looks ready to hang up gloves.
