Zanfer Promotions CEO Fernando Beltran, who promotes WBC super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada, is holding his nose at the recent financial demands from the WBA champion, Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez.
Estrada and Gonzalez first met in 2012, at the junior flyweight limit. Estrada moved down to 108-pounds for his first and only bout in the weight class, and lost a twelve round unanimous decision.
After suffering two crushing defeats at the hands of Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Chocolatito has rebuilt his career with a dominant knockout win over Kal Yafai to capture the WBA title in the first quarter of 2020.
The victory has catapulted Chocolatito back in the mix for bigger fights.
Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom has a co-promotional agreement with both boxers and wants to match them in a high stakes rematch in the fall.
Chocolatito has openly demanded "more than a million dollars" for the rematch with Estrada. If he doesn't receive that sum, he warns that a fight with Estrada "will not happen." He also says Estrada deserves to receive more than a million for the fight as well.
Beltrán does not agree with the amount of money being demanded by the four division world champion.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, sporting events must be held in a closed doors setting - which eliminates the revenue generated from a live crowd.
Both fighters are aligned with streaming app DAZN, which is currently going through financial struggles due to the pandemic.
"Sometimes it's easier to say that [he wants a lot of money] than saying that he doesn't want the fight. And maybe he forgets the summary of his career in his last five fights. We as promoters want to give the public what they want and we take care of the economic conditions of our fighter. The priority here is to say that we are ready, the negotiations will come later," said Beltrán to ESPN Deportes.
