Frank Espinoza, the manager of Abner Mares, has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that his boxer's rematch with WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez is being pushed back to 2014.
On August 24th at the StubHub Center in Carson, Gonzalez (55-8, 47Kos) scored a shocking first round stoppage of Mares (26-1-1, 14KOs) to recapture the WBC crown.
A few days after the loss, Mares exercised his rematch clause.
The rematch was originally slated to take place in late 2013, but now the fight is going to be pushed back to next year.
"The rematch won't happen this year. Abner is going to take the rest of the year off and then we hope to do the rematch with Jhonny Gonzalez in the first half of 2014," Espinoza told BoxingScene.com.
