Oscar Escandon (22-1, 15KOs) got the best New Year's present that he could ask for - when the World Boxing Association ordered a rematch with WBA interim-super bantamweight champion Nehomar Cermeno (22-5-1, 13KOs).

They fought in August, with Cermeno winning what some called a controversial twelve round split decision at the Megapolis Convention Center in Panama City. Two judges saw it for Cermeno with scores of 117-111, 116-113 and the third had it 115-113 for Escandon.

The rematch could take place on a date in February or March.

"I am very happy with this information that I was given, that I'll get to face Cermeno again. He is a tremendous fighter, but I am too. He has impressive qualities and certainly this time I'm going to do everything to win that world title. I've studied him and I know what I have to do [to win] this fight. I thought I won the [first] fight, but the judges saw something different," Escandon said.
