Errol Spence Jr. confirmed the worst-kept secret on the upcoming boxing schedule Tuesday morning.
The unbeaten IBF/WBC welterweight champion confirmed through his Twitter and Instagram accounts that his title unification fight against Yordenis Ugas is set for April 16 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Spence, 31, was raised in nearby DeSoto, Texas, and has beaten Mikey Garcia and Danny Garcia in pay-per-per-view main events at the home stadium of his favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys.
Spence (27-0, 21 KOs) and the Cuban-born Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs) will fight for three of boxing’s four recognized welterweight titles. Miami’s Ugas will make his first defense of the WBA “super” welterweight title he won when he upset Manny Pacquiao by unanimous decision August 21 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Ugas, 35, replaced Spence as Pacquiao’s opponent on 11 days’ notice because a pre-fight medical examination detected damage to Spence’s right retina. The strong southpaw underwent surgery the week before he was supposed to oppose Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) in what would’ve been the biggest fight of his eight-year pro career.
Spence was cleared to return to trainer Derrick James’ gym in Dallas during the fall and has healed entirely from the aforementioned delicate surgery. He has fought just once since he suffered cuts and scrapes and damaged his teeth in a one-car accident that took place in October 2019 in downtown Dallas.
Spence didn’t fight for 14 months following an accident that initially was believed to be career-threatening. He defeated Danny Garcia by unanimous decision in his most recent fight, a 12-rounder in December 2020.
The 12-round, 147-pound bout between Spence and Ugas will headline a four-fight pay-per-view event that either FOX Sports or Showtime will distribute nine weeks from Saturday night. Tickets go on sale today at noon CT and can be purchased by visiting SeatGeek.com by using the access code, “boxing.”
