Top welterweight contender Errol Spence (21-0, 18KOs) is not exactly sure what to make of Danny Garcia's first defense of the WBC welterweight title - if the rumors prove to be true.
Garcia (32-0, 18KOs), who captured the WBC welterweight title with a win over Robert Guerrero back in January, is rumored to be facing junior welterweight contender John Molina (29-6, 23KOs) in the fall. Molina is 2-3 in his last five fights and won an upset decision over Ruslan Provodnikov back in June.
Garcia was initially slated to face former welterweight champion Andre Berto in his first defense. Berto had recently taken to the social networks to blast Garcia for passing him over in favor of Molina.
Spence, who is the mandatory challenger to the IBF title, remembers when Garcia criticized his level of opposition. The undefeated U.S. Olympian is really hoping that Garcia's fight with Molina is nothing more than a bridge to a potential unification with WBA champion Keith Thurman. A few days ago, BoxingScene.com reported that Garcia-Thurman was being discussed for the first quarter of 2017.
"[He should probably be] fighting somebody else. They criticize me and say 'oh why would I fight Errol Spence he hasn't fought nobody, this and that' - but John Molina, I don't even think that he's ranked in the top ten of the WBC right now. I'm not going to criticize him because hopefully its a tuneup fight or just a stay busy fight for him to fight Keith Thurman next year," Spence told BoxingScene.com.
"Hopefully that's what it is and he's not fighting John Molina just because. You're always going to get criticized, but John Molina is not even a 147-pounder, he's a 140-pounder. Danny gets it the worst on social media with the cherry picking things. He knows it too, because he responds. But if he's not bothered by it.... I don't care, it's not me."
