WBA interim-junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KOs) believes a fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-1-1, 30KOs) will happen at some point in the future.
Canelo is facing countryman Alfredo Angulo on March 8th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Lara does not have a scheduled return, but there have been rumors of former champion Ishe Smith as being a possible opponent.
In Friday article on BoxingScene.com, Canelo said his "full focus" was on Angulo, but he also said he sees Lara as an opponent "in the future."
"I agree he should focus on the fight he has in front of him. It should be a great fight and I'm ready to fight either guy next," Lara said.
"There is a lot of public demand to see that fight. Many people feel he would beat me but there's only one way to find that out. Champions fight the best so if he wants to be the best he will have to take on the one who everyone recognizes as the best at 154 pounds, which is me."
"The fans deserve to see the best fights and Golden Boy puts on the best fights so it will happen sooner or later. I will keep doing my job, which is winning, and fight the best who are willing to step in the ring."
