Former three-division champion Erik Morales appeared on BoxingScene.com's official audio show " Leave It In The Ring " to discuss his comeback, career goals and his next upcoming fight. Morales said his next opponent will likely be lightweight contender Vicente Escobedo (22-2, 14KOs) on July 17th in Tijuana, Mexico. The fight will take place at junior welterweight.
Morales returned in March, after a two and a half year layoff, to win a twelve round unanimous decision over Jose Alfaro. Morales told us that he wanted to fight a rematch with David Diaz before approaching Escobedo. Diaz turned it down.
"I still need to work a little bit more on certain things like regaining my speed. It wasn't easy to come back after being away for such a long time. Even though I trained for six months before my last fight, I still feel like I'm lacking something. I have another fight on July 17th, against Vicente Escobedo. It's going to be a tough fight, a good fight. Ecobedo, even though he was an Olympic fighter before, he is new and he still lacks experience. I need to take a few more fights with opponents of this type of caliber," Morales said.
