Former three division champion Erik Morales is still looking to become the first Mexican fighter to win a fourth major title in a fourth weight class. He is looking to make a slow and calculated return. He wants to take a 10-round tuneup against an opponent ranked in the top-ten of a major sanctioning body, and he wants the fight to take place at a catch-weight of 144-pounds.
Morales told ESTO that the toughest part of returning is not the training but the stuggles to drop the weight. It's not certain on the likely return weight. Morales says the lightweight division is probably where he would like to end up fighting. He says that he made a huge mistake by taking the third fight with Manny Pacquiao, resulting in a three round knockout loss in November 2006. Morales claims to have taken the third Pacquiao fight because of his loyalty to promotional company Top Rank. Making the weight of 130 for the third Pacquiao fight was too much for his body and he came to the ring with nothing in the tank. He plans to go down very slow to test his body out.
