To the surprise of everyone at the offices of the World Boxing Council (WBC) in Mexico City, former four division world champion Erik "El Terrible" Morales rejected the idea of a final farewell fight.
Morales was scheduled to fight earlier this year against Jorge Paez Jr. but withdrew with a hand injury. In a twist of fate, Morales is now helping train Paez. Morales would later announce his retirement, because his hand injury was going to take longer than expected to fully heal. Morales' last fight took place in 2012, when he was knocked out by Danny Garcia.
Morales wants to concentrate on being a trainer and helping his younger brother, Ivan Morales.
"My time in the ring has ended," Morales said. "As a [former] boxer my responsibility is to teach the new generations the basic principles to lead a flawless campaign in every aspect, with health being the main thing, and to take care of their heritage."
"Boxing goes through a transition, but the up and coming idols will reach new generations. Mexico has great talents and we have to the time to wait for them to become stars."
