As Erik Morales continues his comeback, his mind is focused on landing the opportunity to fight Juan Manuel Marquez for his WBO/WBA lightweight titles in 2011. The WBC has announced that Morales, if he defeats Willie Limond on September 11, will become the official challenger to lightweight champion Humberto Soto. As much as Morales would like to make history by winning the green belt and becoming the first Mexican boxer to win four titles in four weight divisions, he believes a fight with Marquez would be a historic contest for the country of Mexico.

Morales wants to first beat Limond and then wants to see how his body responds to dropping in weight. Morales has fought between junior welterweight and welterweight since returning earlier this year after being away from the ring since 2007.

"I'm happy to be able to challenge Humberto Soto, but if I make the effort to fight at lightweight - I would rather face the best in the division and I think that's Juan Manuel Marquez, but there is still time to do it," Morales told Sal Rodriguez.

"With Marquez I have the chance to fight in a historic event, whereas I do not believe a fight with Soto would bring as much attention as a fight would with Marquez, but we will still have to talk about after we win the fight on September 11 and then see what happens. I have to see how my body responds by attempting to go down to lightweight.
