Erik Morales was on Boxingscene’s official audio show The Boxing Lab and addressed a possible rematch with Marcos Maidana. Both men faced off earlier this year and the result was a majority decision for Maidana in a terrific fight.
A talk of a rematch had been previously discussed but no agreement was ever reached. That didn’t stop both fighters from spewing insults and blame for why the rematch was not made.
Since their meeting, Morales has gone on to win the WBC Light Welterweight title and no longer seems interested in pursuing such a fight.
“I asked for it, I wanted it. But he didn’t want it. He doesn’t want it” said Morales. “He only wants to do things when it’s beneficial for him. At this moment, a fight with him isn’t beneficial for me because it’s not significant.”
“Even though they raised his hand, I know I won the fight. I know I was better in the ring. I hope to face better fighters and I don’t think I need a fight with him.”
In a previous report, Morales expressed interest to return to the lightweight division and fight WBC champion Antonio DeMarco. A long overdue fight with countryman Juan Manuel Marquez is also of interest to him, but he feels Marquez is the one who doesn’t want the fight.
